What's the best way to transition from an old job to a new one?

I've been at my job for a little over a year, but it's getting kind of lame duck for me, I make pretty good money (75k) , but I want to move up, or start my own biz. Should I stay here longer and pay off my student loans, save up some more, or I dunno what do you think?
