What's the best way to convince me boss to give me a pay rise?

Hi guys. I am about to ask my boss to give me a pay rise. What would be the best way to do it. Shall I be serious or take it easy.. Well I am confused. My boss is a nice guy, it's just that this is my first job and I have never asked for pay rise before. Just so you know: I am a hardworking and popular person. I think I deserve it:)
